Chapter Fourteen

The next two weeks were awkward at Shady Grove. Kit never broke stride, she took up in the guest room in the main house and was early to work every morning after that. Cade worked very hard to not make it weird while they were both in the same house, but knowing she was just a few footsteps away from his bed every night wasn’t an easy position to be in. And he was too self-conscious to rub away the thought of her every night and so most nights he fell asleep pent up and tense.

But he also spent that time trying to devise ways to get closer to her. She wasn’t giving him the cold shoulder at all, but it was obvious she was being overly friendly while at work, her body language practically screaming “we didn’t sleep together” any time they were around the rest of the staff.

It also didn’t help that the legal meetings to fight Parker on his moronic trek to break up the farm had started. From the wording on all the paperwork they’d received, Cade thought it would be more like a trial, but instead of meeting in a courtroom, they met in a conference room with a group of lawyers between them while they all hashed things out and it wasn’t going well.

Parker had paid dearly for a bright new lawyer from the city who’d dug up some pretty detrimental laws pertaining to heritage properties and how their tight wills weren’t really that binding. Every time a meeting concluded, they’d gotten no closer to any kind of agreement and Cade just became more and more angry with Parker who became more distant and resentful toward him. It was heartbreaking to watch it unfold and there was nothing he could do to prevent it. Parker was 22. He was no longer under the family’s control and there was nothing Cade could do to stop him from fraying that one last thread that bound them all together.

Sitting alone at the conference table after the most recent meeting, his lawyer interrupted his spiraling thoughts and took a seat next to him.

“I know how hard this has been for you,” she said. “But I see this kind of thing all the time. Wills tear families apart in the worst ways, especially where younger people are involved. They don’t have the experience or the wherewithal to understand what their actions are really doing. Sometimes you just have to accept it for what it is and let it happen.”

“What are you saying?” Cade asked.

“Perhaps you should reconsider his offer and let this thing go. I know your farm is important to you and so is your brother, but you’re going to have to make a choice which one is more important.”

She patted him in the shoulder, gave him a smile and left the room. And in that moment, he bowed his head and wept. He loved Parker and he loved the farm, but they each had different connotations to him.
